Masterworking is where a strong Diablo 4 character starts to feel properly finished. Once you've got a well-rolled ancestral piece, it's worth treating it with more care than the rest of your stash. Good D4 items can carry a build through difficult fights, but Masterworking is what pushes their key stats far beyond the usual range. Each of the twelve ranks adds value across the item, while ranks four, eight, and twelve give one affix a 25% jump. That lucky hit can change how a build plays.

Materials matter more than spare loot

Salvaging should be part of every trip back to town, especially once your inventory starts filling with legendary drops. Selling gear may look tempting early on, yet the Blacksmith turns unwanted pieces into materials you'll need later. Rawhide, Iron Chunks, Veiled Crystals, and Forgotten Souls all come into play as your upgrades get costly. The quick salvage options are handy after a long dungeon run. Mark things as junk, clear them out, and keep moving. It's less exciting than finding a new weapon, sure, but players who skip this routine often feel short on supplies when a great item finally lands.

Temper before you commit

Tempering comes before Masterworking for a simple reason: there's no point spending Pit materials on a piece that doesn't support your skill setup. Temper Manuals open pools of possible affixes for weapons, armour, and jewellery. You might want extra damage for a core skill, movement speed, resource help, or defensive value. The result is rolled from the chosen manual, so there's always a bit of tension. Temper attempts are limited. Don't rush it just because an item has a high power level.

Keep manuals that match your main skills.
Temper useful gear before investing Pit materials.
Save reset attempts for exceptional items.

Repairing keeps the run alive

Repairs are easy to forget until a death leaves part of your equipment broken. At that point, lost stats can turn a normally manageable fight into a rough one. Repair equipped gear before heading into a Torment boss attempt, a stronghold, or a serious Pit push. Then check the item again after Masterworking milestones; if the boosted affix misses the stat your build needs, resetting may be worth the cost. Gold disappears quickly during this process, so players who choose to buy D4 Gold can keep their crafting plans moving while they chase better rolls.
